2024 Japan Olympic Trials
A 29-year-old athlete appears on the 6th day of the 2024 Japan Olympic Trials Daiya Seto It's going up big.
The 2016 Olympic medalist qualified for the Paris Games at the 11th hour with a time of 1:56.87 in the men's 200m IM.
The 2IM was Seto's last chance to qualify for the Olympic team, having narrowly missed out on his previous events, the 400m IM and 200m fly.
His time of under 1 minute 57 seconds was his season's best, beating his fourth-place finish of 1 minute 57.54 seconds at last month's World Championships. He holds his lifetime best of 1:55.55, a result announced at his 2020 FINA Champions Series.
Tonight's 200m IM silver medalist, So Ogatanarrowly missed the qualifying time of 1 minute 57.51 seconds stipulated by the Japan Swimming Federation (JASF). He achieved a time of 1:57.52, coming within 0.01 seconds of the time needed to join Seto.
Seto's performance tonight moved him up to fourth in the world rankings, beating American Carson Foster's time (1:56.97) at last month's world championships.
The third day of qualifying for Japan's Olympic individual qualifying round has ended.
