Recruiting has been a hot topic at UCLA, and new head coach Deshaun Foster is feeling it. “Just the fact that the kids want to be here,” Coach Foster told reporters gathered this week. “You know what I mean?'' Aside from this overhaul, Foster's UCLA recruiting pitch has also changed to accommodate the team's spring practice schedule.
UCLA released its spring practice schedule late last week (full release), and this was one of the practices to be held at non-traditional times.
All but one spring practice will be held at 8:30 a.m., with the lone exception being the Bruins' April 19 session, which will be held at 6 p.m.
“Jim More (Jr.) used to do that a lot when he was here,” Foster said. “It's hard for recruits to come here because we practice early. Some of them skip school. So if we time it for Friday night lights, everyone can come here after school and the parents can take you. I have to get. “More parents should come here too. 7-on-7 coaches can bring players and things like that. I can do that, but I also want to be involved with parents.”
It surprises people. Why wasn't this done under the previous (Chip Kelly) administration? It's clear that UCLA can have a great freshman class without it, but what are the downsides to moving one spring practice to later in the day?
It's hard to tell from the outside looking in, but considering how far away we are from football season, the potential of one irregular practice time, especially if it leads to better talent on the roster. The negative side effects can definitely be reduced. Its.
