Hundreds of people from the Midwest and beyond will travel to West Michigan this weekend to compete in a three-day tournament.
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The weather outside may be cold, but the on-ice action inside Patterson Ice Center and Eagles Ice Center is hot as dozens of sled hockey teams compete this weekend in the Griff's Sled Hockey Classic.
“We've got 12 junior teams and 13 adult teams from across the Midwest and East coming together to celebrate sled hockey, which is great,” said Molly McKinney, sports coordinator at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Center. ” he said. .
“It's unbelievable. And I know a lot of families love coming to Grand Rapids. We just had this amazing opportunity.”
Six games were played on Friday night. Saturday's games will be played from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the championship game taking place in the first half of Sunday. McKinney said it's a great opportunity for people who have never watched sled hockey to become familiar with the game.
“Oh my god, those stops and starts and those quick changes of direction. The way they move and the speed of the game is just incredible,” she said.
“We travel all over the country, so it's really great to see the whole family, from the youngest athletes to the adult athletes, being able to come and watch them. Everyone's family and friends are there. , come to Grand Rapids and have the camaraderie of all celebrating the great sport of sled hockey.”
