David Benavidez is really thirsty and is trying to get His Excellency Turki Alarcik to intervene to come up with the ingredients to make a fight with Canelo Alvarez happen.
Benavidez posted a message on social media cringing at Saudi promoter Turki, which some boxing fans characterized as begging at his feet.
We need His Excellency to come up with $200 million to take Canelo's career to the next level, but that's not happening.
“Selfless” or selfish?
Even more disturbing was Benavidez's statement that if he lost, he would fight for free, and if he won, he would donate a portion of his wallet to a charity of His Excellency's choice. Pretending to do charity work sounds like a publicity stunt on Benavidez's part, and not something that could actually happen.
Benavidez'sIf I lose, I’ll fight for free.” The comment was hilarious and sounded insincere. Given how big Benavidez is at cruiserweight size, a win against the smaller and older Canelo is likely. Therefore, his comment that he will part with his wallet if he loses is an empty offer.
Even if he were at the same level, he would likely have raked in a ton of money in support leading up to the Canelo fight, and even if he loses, the popularity he gains will give his career a huge boost.
“Turki Alarusik, bring the biggest and most exciting fight to Saudi Arabia. This will be the biggest Mexican vs. Mexican-American fight in boxing history, and what better place for the whole world to watch than at The Kingdome?” There is no place like that,” Benavidez said on Instagram.
“This fight is for pride and glory. I fight for greatness, not money. Sir, if I don't win against Canelo, I will give you the entire amount of my wallet. Donate to your favorite children's charity.
“If I win against Canelo, I'm going to donate a huge chunk of that purse to help relieve child hunger around the world. I'm the people's champion and I'll keep fighting the best! I'll keep my word !”
Face reality, Benavidez.
Benavidez needs to shed his obsession with Canelo and move up to his cruiserweight division so he can mix it up with fighters his own size like Hy Opetaia and Mairis Briedis. The way Benavidez goes after Canelo is heartbreaking and painful to watch.
