USC football quarterback Caleb Williams took the field for his pro day Wednesday as a crowd of reporters awaited his arrival. Williams pitched at his pro day with all 32 teams in attendance. This was especially important after Williams did not throw at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this offseason.
Throwing began late in the morning as Williams took the field and began warming up with receivers and running backs Brenden Rice, Taj Washington, Austin Jones and Marshawn Lloyd. He then started throwing some short routes and hitting receivers in stride, then moved on to more medium and deep throws. The highlight of the session was his last pass when he fired the ball over 60 yards down the field to Brenden Rice, who secured the pass.
However, not all pitches were perfect. Williams threw too far down the right sideline on one pass. In another game, he threw just out of Taj Washington's reach and had to make a spectacular catch to get the ball away.
“I think it went well,” Williams told reporters after his pro day performance. “I missed some deep passes and threw it a little over their heads, so I didn't give him a lot of room for error with the flight of the ball. He missed a right-low pass to Austin Jones. I did. I threw it a little behind him. ”
“I wanted to come out here and put on a show, but I’ve been training for the next step,” Williams said. “We have been preparing for a full-fledged season.”
Williams said his preparation for the NFL includes not only focusing on mechanics, but also getting in proper physical condition. Williams, in particular, is preparing for the reality of being hit, which many rookie quarterbacks in the NFL face.
“Yeah, I'm preparing for the big guys,” Williams said. “I'm about 217 right now. I usually play at this weight, so I'm going to continue at this weight for the rest of the year…Weight-wise, you've helped me take a hit.”Especially fast At the stage, I'm going to take some. ”
Overall, Williams seemed to confirm what was already expected at his pro day. He showed off his arm and talent and did nothing to hurt his stock heading into the 2024 NFL Draft. Overall, the pro day seemed to indicate that Williams is on the right track to becoming the No. 1 pick.
