HYDERABAD: A woman and her minor daughter, who are trained in martial arts, foiled a robbery attempt by two armed men posing as delivery men at their home in Begumpet, local police said on Friday.
Police said the two suspects, who hail from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, planned to rob a house and fled ahead of the attempt, choosing the house.
As per their plan, they visited the house around 1pm yesterday posing as courier. Amita Mahhot, the owner of the house, was at home, but a servant went to pick up the delivery.
Police said two suspects with their faces covered – one in a helmet and the other in a mask – forced their way into the home with the intention of robbing the home.
One of the defendants entered the kitchen and held a knife to the maid's throat and threatened her.
Meanwhile, Amita's teenage daughter tried to stop the other accused and a scuffle broke out between them. Meanwhile, 46-year-old Amita resisted the robbery attempt along with her daughter.
During the scuffle, the defendant pulled a country-made handgun from his bag and attempted to point it at both mother and daughter.
However, Amita, who is trained in martial arts, kicks him and snatches the weapon from his hands. She rained blows on the accused, who fled after being kicked and punched by her. However, the accomplice, who was inside the kitchen, was unaware of what was happening outside.
Residents of the area heard screams coming from the house and rushed in to apprehend the second robbery suspect.
The man was handed over to police, who said the robber who initially fled was also arrested.
Police praised the mother-daughter duo, saying they had shown exemplary courage.
“It is pertinent to state that the courage shown by mother Amita and her daughter is exemplary…” DCP (North Zone) Rohini Priyadarshini said in a statement.
The DCP appreciated the courage of the mother and daughter.
