PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has come forward to help a family in his hometown facing an unimaginable loss. According to reports From NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Hurts paid for the funeral costs of murdered Texas high school football player Jahvon Coles.
Coles, 18, was shot to death on March 9 at a party in Humble, Texas, a suburb of Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
According to his HUDL profile, Coles plays strong safety and outside linebacker for the North Shore High School football team, a team with a long history in Houston football, according to local media reports, and the Hurts. They played against their nearby alma mater, Channel View High School.
In 2014, Hurts became the first Channelview quarterback to beat North Shore, winning in dramatic fashion with a Hail Mary pass with zero time left. According to the Houston Chronicle, the pass was caught for a touchdown, leading to a 49-48 victory.
Harris County authorities said Coles was found suffering from gunshot wounds outside a large home rented on Airbnb. There was a large group of teenagers and people in their early 20s at the scene, and the party may have been advertised on social media as well.
One or two gunmen opened fire on the group from about a block away, then fled in a car, the sheriff's office said.
Mr. Hertz has not made a public statement about paying for Coles' funeral expenses. We have reached out to representatives for the Eagles and Hearts for comment.
“Please help us bring closure to the family of Jahvon Coles,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote on Facebook.
