4-time Olympic gold medalist and 4-time Olympian allison schmidt has been announced as the speaker at Georgia State's undergraduate commencement ceremony in May.
Mr. Schmidt attended Georgia State from 2008 to 2013 and graduated in 2013 with a degree in psychology. While attending the University of Georgia, Schmidt won his NCAA title in the 500 freestyle in 2009, 2010, and 2011. In 2010 he also won the 200 freestyle NCAA title.
After the 2010-2011 season, she had an Olympic redshirt season in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. She moved to Baltimore and trained with Bob Bowman for London. In London, Schmidt won individual gold in the 200m freestyle and silver in the 400m freestyle. Her 200 freestyle time of 1:53.61 still stands as an American record. She also helped the U.S. win gold medals in the 4×200 free relay and women's 4×100 medley relay.
After the London Olympics, Schmidt returned to Georgia for his senior season. In the spring of 2013, Schmidt won the NCAA 200 freestyle title and also helped his team win the 400 freestyle and 800 free relay. Georgia's women's team won the NCAA team title. Schmidt won the Honda Sports Award during his senior year of college.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Schmidt helped the U.S. women's team win a gold medal in the 4×200 free relay and a silver medal in the 4×100 free relay. She also served as team captain in Rio. She also qualified for the 2020 Olympics and once again earned team captain honors. At the Tokyo Games, she helped the United States win a silver medal in the 4×200 free relay and a bronze medal in the 4×100 free relay.
Schmidt will deliver the undergraduate commencement address on May 10th at the school's football stadium.Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering Jenna Jambeck A graduation speech will be given on May 9th.
