The Aspen High School girls lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling 11-8 in Steamboat Springs. It ended the skier's winning streak to start the season at three, including a dramatic rally against Roaring Fork last week.
Aspen, now 3-1, next hosts Battle Mountain on Tuesday before Steamboat comes to town on Thursday, AHS' final two games before spring break. The Rams (0-1) are scheduled to play at Mullen on Monday.
The AHS boys lacrosse team continues to go 1-0 overall after a 10-2 win over Crested Butte in the season opener on March 9th. Last week's game in Glenwood Springs was rescheduled due to the winter storm that hit the area.
Next, the skiers are scheduled to play at Battle Mountain on Monday and Vail Mountain on Thursday. AHS hosts Stevenson on Saturday for its final game before spring break.
Glenwood Lacrosse is also 1-0 after opening the season with a 19-4 win over Durango. The Demons travel to Eagle Valley on Wednesday.
women's soccer
The Aspen High School girls soccer team hosted Vail Mountain in its home opener on Saturday, losing 5-1 on the AHS turf. The Skiers fell to 0-3-1 on the season. AHS fell short against Grand Valley on Thursday, losing 1-0.
Aspen is currently not scheduled to play again until April 4 against Moffat County after spring break.
The Basalt girls soccer team suffered a 10-0 loss on the road Saturday in Steamboat Springs. The Longhorns are now 1-3 overall, coming off a win in the season opener against Telluride. Like Aspen, BHS is currently on hiatus and will not play again until hosting Montrose on April 2nd.
Roaring Fork girls soccer lost 3-0 to Montrose on Saturday and is now 0-1-1. In the opening game, they drew 2-2 with VMS. The Rams are scheduled to host Fruita Monument on Tuesday.
baseball
The Aspen baseball team opened the season with a split against Timnath over the weekend. In Friday's game in Grand Junction, the Skiers won 8-7 and lost 12-7. These were the first games under new head coach Jason Lapointe.
AHS' next game on the schedule is Thursday at Eagle Valley, the last game before spring break. Aspen's home opener is currently scheduled for April 13th against Moffat County.
Basalt baseball season also begins. BHS is 1-1, losing its season opener 13-5 to Grand Junction, but winning Saturday's game against Meeker, 7-3. The Longhorns are next scheduled to play at Glenwood Springs on Thursday before taking a break before playing at Summit on April 2.
women's tennis
The AHS girls tennis season is finding its footing. The Skiers have lost close games against Delta (4-2) and Glenwood Springs (3-2). AHS will next host Basalt on Thursday at the Maroon Creek Club. According to MaxPreps, BHS has not yet competed.
girls golf
The AHS girls golf season opened March 11 at Chipeta Golf Course in Grand Junction. The Skiers had a total of 253 shots, and as a team he finished fifth. Durango won the tournament with his 224 shots.
Ellie White of Durango College shot a 71 to take first place individually, beating second-place Jaydyn Petry (Rifle College) by three strokes.
Aspen's top players were sophomore Linnea Flynn, who placed sixth with 78 points, and junior Audrey Woodrow with 10 points.th The team's top returning players, Lena Person and Brooke O'Sullivan, did not play.
The current schedule leaves AHS off until a potential tournament at Devil's Thumb on March 28th. The Skiers are scheduled to hold their home tournament this season on April 16th.

On Friday, Rifle High School hosted an early season track and field meet that included most area schools. Here are some of the highlights of the Roaring Fork Valley. We will mainly focus on top-five finishes.
One player who stood out was Basalt senior Jaycee Reed. She easily won the girls 100-meter dash in 12.71 seconds and finished tied for first in the high jump with Fruita's Gracie Lloyd at 4 feet, 11 inches.
In the girls' 400-meter dash, Roaring Fork sophomore Nikki Tardif took second with a time of 1 minute, 3.68 seconds. Rylan Petrie, a second-year rifle student, took first place with a time of 1:03.25.
In the girls' 800-meter dash, Aspen freshman Avila Jennings was fifth in 2:37.88, and Basalt junior Ana Cabrera was seventh in 2:38.7.
In the women's 800-meter sprint medley, Aspen finished fifth (2:08.29) and Basalt sixth (2:09.51).
In the women's 4×400 meter relay, Basalt placed fifth with a time of 4:40.03. Glenwood took second place with a time of 4:33.84.
In the women's shot put, Coleridge's Breeley Jensen won 38-01.
On the boys side, Aspen senior Niko Smith stood out. He placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.08 seconds and third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.8 seconds. Glenwood's Joaquin Sandoval won the boys 200-meter dash in 23.22 seconds. He was second in the 100 meters (11.42).
In the men's 300-meter hurdles, Basalt junior Jared Tenenbaum was fifth (43.86 points) and junior teammate Lorenzo Salazar Tedin was seventh (45.11 points).
In the boys 800-meter dash, Glenwood junior Ty Heath took second with a time of 2:03.2.
In the boys 3,200-meter dash, Basalt senior Owen Lambert took fifth place (10:31.16) and BHS sophomore Tauler Scott took sixth place (10:36.26).
Glenwood was second in the boys 4×100 meter relay (45.47 seconds). The Demons also took second in the 4×400 (3:35.67), while Aspen took sixth (3:46.86). Glenwood was fifth in the 4×800 (9 minutes, 31.9 seconds).
In the boys' high jump, Aspen senior Will Gerardi placed third (5-09).
