Jahvon Coles, 18, was a standout football player as a senior at North Shore High School with a 4.1 GPA and a college commitment that seemed limitless, according to his family.
The teenager was shot Saturday night outside a house party in the 4900 block of Fieldwick Lane in Humble. The party was held at a short-term rental property and was attended by more than 100 people, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
“Just love your kids,” Coles' mother Britney told KPRC 2.
The linebacker played on the football team that went to the state championship last season. His family said they hope he plays college football and continues to play in the NFL.
“I always think I'm special, but he was really special,” said his grandfather, Braxton Coles. “People don't realize it until other people tell them. And, you know, through this tragedy, we've had people from the community, from everywhere, actually the country, to show that that's the kind of kid he was. An overflowing amount of love poured out from within.”
The family smiles with pride as they remember Jahvon Coles, also known as “Veezy.”
“We instilled in us that we have to get great grades. We don't do C's, we don't do mediocre, we don't do B's. Give us an A,” Brittney Coles said. “He had a lot of plans.”
The family had just visited Lamar University. Jahvon Coles wanted to continue his football career after his graduation in a few months.
The senior sign with his name and number in his family's front yard now has a black band around it after the shooting that cut short his promising life.
what happened
“Everyone is so panicked,” Brittney Coles said of the call, which came in around midnight. “No one knew what to say.”
Friends who were at the party called her, thinking he had passed out and had a seizure, she said. They told her that her fireworks went off, knocking all of her to the ground, but he didn't get up.
She kept asking them if he was breathing and continued on the phone as partygoers could be heard trying to perform CPR and call an ambulance.
When they arrived at the hospital, they learned he had been shot in the chest, back and fingers.
“The individuals involved may have been on the street, possibly a block or two away, when they fired shots at the party,” said HCSO Sgt. Miller said at the scene Saturday night. The gunman then left the scene in a vehicle, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
HCSO investigators returned to the remote area Monday afternoon. KPRC 2 found them speaking with people living there as they continue to work to obtain surveillance video for analysis by the High Tech Crimes Unit.
Details of the suspect or vehicle have not yet been released.
Recent gun violence targeting youth caught the attention of Houston Mayor John Whitmire on Monday.
“The reports over the weekend are alarming,” Whitmire said at a news conference about the HPD probation scandal. “There are too many young people. It's a tragedy for soccer players and high school players who never graduate.”
Brittney Coles said she was looking forward to celebrating her son's graduation and he was ready for it, but now that opportunity has been taken away for nothing.
“No matter how hard we try to protect our children, there are still evil people in this world,” Brittney Coles said. “You took away my pride and joy just as you took away my world.”
A coach told KPRC 2 earlier in the day that Jahvon Coles is someone who never gets in trouble and always does the right thing on and off the field.
HCSO asks you to call the Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS with any information regarding this incident.
