She enrolled in college as a makeup artist after high school, not knowing that there was a career in hockey, but she knew her heart was in the sport.
She eventually enrolled in an online hockey general manager scouting course.
Scott joined the International Scout Service's (IS) Hockey Mentorship Program in 2018 and served as a scout for the service for two years while working two jobs.
“I love identifying potential talent and that evaluation process,” she said. “That's where my passion is. It's really the evaluation process. And building a team is exciting.”
After two seasons as Erie's full-time scout, Scott made the bold decision to leave the organization and move to Calgary to become an independent scout in June 2022.
“I continued to hone my craft and paid my own way throughout the year,” she said. “Tickets to all the games, all the travel, everything. I put all my money into scouting and developing and ended up getting an internship the following year (with the Avalanche).”
Scott received some financial help from his family during the move and supplemented his income by working as a bartender at a Calgary casino, which allowed him time to scout games.
Not content with that, she also enrolled in the University of Florida's online sports management program.
“I've always had the mindset of betting on myself, working hard and continuing to evolve,” she said. “I think I've taken a lot of risks to get to where I am now, and I wouldn't change my path for anything.”
Scott said she hopes women, women of color and others who don't come from so-called “traditional” hockey backgrounds will join her on her journey.
“I grew up playing hockey, but I never became a professional hockey player or went to college for hockey,” she said, “I just had a passion for it. I love scouting, and that's what I've been doing and will continue to hone my craft.”
“I hope that people who don't necessarily come from traditional backgrounds can see themselves in me and believe that they can take it seriously and get it done.”
