Over the past decade, Jerry Stackhouse has become one of the most accomplished assistant coaches in the NBA and NCAA. Following a five-year stint at Vanderbilt University, Stackhouse has finally returned to the NBA as an assistant coach with the team he is most excited about: the Golden State Warriors.
Jerry Stackhouse spoke with Anthony Slater of The Athletic about what joining the Golden State Warriors means to him.
“Golden State would have been at the top of my list,” Stackhouse said. “I would have called and said I'd like to come to training camp and practice.”
For Stackhouse, the opportunity to join the Golden State Warriors came at the perfect time: He was already five years removed from the NBA and would have been gone even longer had he completed his contract with Vanderbilt University.
“I don't think the timing could have been more perfect for me,” Stackhouse told The Athletic. “If I had played out my contract, I would have been nine or 10 years out of the NBA.”
Jerry Stackhouse, a former elite guard/wing, believes he can help develop players like Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Andrew Wiggins and even Draymond Green.
“That's the position I played,” Stackhouse said, “I've sat in that seat. I've been there. I understand what they're going through, from the young guys looking for a contract to the guys whose style of play is changing as they get older. I'm an 18-year veteran. Hopefully, I can come on board and help inspire and motivate the guys and take that next step and make the most of these last few years with Steph and Draymond and make the most of the second half of their careers.”
The Golden State Warriors are far from a perfect roster — the players and coaches know it — but they have the kind of fierce rivalries that intimidate opponents.
