“I've always wanted to come to the Olympics,” Kylie told The Associated Press after the U.S. lost 4-1 to medal-favorite Argentina. “When they qualified to come to Paris, I thought it made sense. And when I sat down and talked with Ashley and Kelly, it was kind of a natural thing. … Thoroughly, it makes sense. We're happy to be here.”
Jason also wanted to attend the Olympics, but the Summer Olympics overlapped with NFL training camps. “When I found out I had the opportunity to participate in this event, the more I thought about it, I thought, 'This is actually an opportunity, let's take advantage of it,'” Jason said. “We love sports, we love competition, we love global events, and this is a really unique place where the whole world can come together and bond over competition and sports.”
The Kelsey siblings are no strangers to it — Jason played center for the Philadelphia Eagles for 13 seasons and won a Super Bowl, while Kylie played field hockey as a defensive player in high school and college. Kylie joked that her TikTok with Ashley Sessa and Kelly Lepage was embarrassing, but worth it.
“It was really cool to sit down with them and talk about what this means to them and how much they've been looking forward to it and what it took to get here and then to see them up on this stage is just amazing,” Kylie said. “It's just a full circle moment where I feel like the field hockey community is really coming together. No matter what level you're playing at, you understand what this means.”
Sessa, who scored the lone U.S. goal, described Kylie Kelsey as one of the coolest people she's ever interacted with.
“Meeting Kylie was a great experience to meet someone who shares the same passion for growing the sport,” Sessa told The Associated Press last week. “It was great to have the opportunity to connect with her and empathize with her. She has a great heart and is a down to earth person.”
After watching a match that he noted was closer than the score indicated, Jason had nothing but good things to say about the young U.S. team, made up of players making their Olympic debut.
“They played hard and although they are a young team, it's fair to say they played against the best team in the world,” he said. “It was a fun game to watch and I'm proud of how hard they fought.”
So where did she get the beret? “From a souvenir shop,” was all Kelsey said.
