Ireland lost 0-2 to Belgium in their opening Pool A match.
Tom Boone and Alexander Hendricks scored one goal each in the first and second half for the defending champions.
Ireland started well and kept possession of the ball well but struggled to create multiple dangerous penetrations into the circle.
Ireland goalkeeper Davie Hart was in world class form, making a number of big saves to help his team win the game.
“I think we started well and we were calm and coming into the game but at the end of the day I don't think we created enough chances,” Ireland captain Sean Murray said.
“I think in the next game we need to be a bit more direct and look for those little areas around the circle and around the back line so we can create a few more chances.”
“We defended well and Davy had a great game but we needed to create more chances.”
This was the Olympic debut for many of the Irish athletes, including Murray.
“It's been a long journey and it's going to be a special day with friends and family. Of course, we'll be a little nervous, that's natural, but we're just ready to compete and show what we're made of on the world stage, at the pinnacle of hockey.”
Ireland's next match is against Australia on Monday.
“We've done our homework on each team and against Australia it's important that we go and iron out some little details. I think we need to play a bit more direct and hopefully score a few goals.”
