Some of the best boxers in the world, past and present, have once competed in the Olympics – their journey began somewhere and the Olympics developed their skills, eventually becoming future world champions and Hall of Famers.
Who will win the gold medal by the end of the 2024 French Olympics?
Boxing has been evolving in the Olympics since 1896, with women's boxing added in 2012. The formula for winning at the Olympics is simple: you earn points for every blow you land.
Men and women wear headgear and compete in three three-minute rounds with a winner determined on the basis of points, knockout or disqualification. Punches must be landed on the target area with enough force to be considered a real punch and with the knuckles of the glove.
Many Olympians have had legendary careers: Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Oleksandr Usyk, Katie Taylor, Claressa Shields, Gennady Golovkin, Lennox Lewis, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Oscar De La Hoya are just a few examples.
Some of the top boxers competing in this year's Olympics include:
- Omari Jones (USA)
- Roscoe Hill (USA)
- Wyatt Sanford (Canada)
- Tamara Thibaut (Canada)
- Lewis Richardson (Great Britain)
- Patrick Brown (Great Britain)
- Callum Peters (AU)
- Caitlin Parker (AU)
- Amit Panghal (India)
- Nikhat Zareen (India)
