The Dallas Mavericks recently agreed to sign guard Spencer Dinwiddie on a one-year contract to fill out their roster for the 2024-25 season. Dinwiddie played 76 regular season games and 18 playoff games for the Mavericks from 2021-23 before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets for Kyrie Irving.
Dinwiddie has seen the talent of superstar guard Luka Doncic up close and said in a recent on-the-street interview that he thinks Doncic is the best player in the NBA right now: “The best player in the NBA right now… I think he should have won MVP this year, but he didn't. I'm going to pick Luka Doncic.”

Doncic had a historic 2023-24 season, averaging 33.9 points, 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds while leading the Mavericks to 50 wins and ultimately a trip to the NBA Finals. Despite his otherworldly performance, he finished third in the MVP category behind Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He won the ESPY Award for Best NBA Player, but we're not sure what that's worth.
Spencer Dinwiddie was part of the Mavs' run to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and was a big factor in their dominating Game 7 victory over the Suns in the semifinals. His play with the Nets and Los Angeles Lakers hasn't been on par with what he showed in those playoffs, but the Mavericks are hopeful he can be a useful guard off the bench and give Doncic and Irving some rest when needed.
But Dinwiddie may just be saying this to get back in the good graces of Mavericks fans. After being released by the Toronto Raptors last season, he signed with the Mavericks before the Lakers, likening them to his doting mother and his “tough love” father. Many fans will bring up this comment when the news breaks on Monday, and he'll be asked about it whenever he speaks to the media.
