History and development
Sambo was created by Vasily Ushpachakov and Viktor Spiridonov, who developed a different version of this martial art. Competitive Sambo is a non-Olympic sport that includes wrestling exercises similar to Judo, but with more variety and fewer physical restrictions. Exercises include ground techniques, submission exercises, leg, choke and restraints.
Sambo Style
Sambo is divided into two main styles.
- Sporty SamboIt is similar to judo and freestyle wrestling, but with different rules and uniforms, and the aim of the fight is to win by eight points or to subdue the opponent using locks or chokes.
- Combat SamboLike Jiu Jitsu and Aikido, it also includes defense against punches and kicks.
Success on the international stage
Until recently, Sambo was a martial art deeply rooted in Russian culture, but not well known outside of the world. Since Sambo fighters started entering the world of MMA with UFC fights, interest in the martial art has grown significantly outside of Russia. Famous fighters include Fedor Emelianenko and Khabib Nurmagomedov, both very strong fighters who started out in Sambo and competed in numerous Sambo tournaments.
