New York-based television network Great American Media (GAM) has partnered with the owners of the NHL hockey team, the New York Islanders, to create a Christmas event that will premiere children's films and offer family-friendly activities.
The first-ever Great American Family Christmas festival is scheduled to take place at UBS Arena (pictured), home of the Islanders, in Elmont, just outside New York City, from November 20, 2024 to January 5, 2025. GAM will screen the film's world premiere. Cinderella's Christmas Ball The stadium will also host ice skating, celebrity meet-and-greets and a nightly tree lighting ceremony. The New York Islanders Hockey Club sees the event as a way to create a new holiday tradition for local fans and draw more people to UBS Arena, co-owner Jon Ledecky said.
Great American Media was founded in 1995 and was acquired in 2021 by Bill Abbott, former CEO of the Hallmark Channel. Abbott has been working to transform the network into a family-friendly network and a safe haven for advertisers who want to reach this audience. The approach seems to be working, and not just because the channel has attracted the New York Islanders as a partner.
