As the world rapidly prepares for the Paris Olympics, it's no wonder that the Monegasque royal family, with its illustrious history in sport, is especially excited. Yesterday, Princess Charlene and her husband Prince Albert II attended the official opening ceremony of a new exhibition in Monaco entitled “La flamme Olympique au fil des temps,” which celebrates the history of the Olympic torch.
Charlene brought a patriotic touch to the occasion in a bold red jumpsuit by designer Elie Saab, reminiscent of the vibrant red and white of Monaco's flag. The on-trend, sleeveless, flared-leg jumpsuit featured a brooch-like embellishment at the center of the bodice for added glamour. Charlene accessorized the look with metallic heeled sandals and simple stud earrings.
The exhibition will take place at Monaco's cultural centre, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco, and will feature Olympic torches from Prince Albert II's private collection. According to the forum, “The exhibition traces the time and history of the Olympic torch relay, embodying the spirit of peace, friendship and fraternity that defines the Olympic movement. From Berlin 1936 to Paris 2024, each torch on display tells its own story, marked by innovation and aesthetics. These objects are not just technological marvels designed to withstand the elements, but also works of art emblematic of the culture of the host country.”
The Monegasque royal family has particularly strong ties to the Olympics: Prince Albert's grandfather, John B. Kelly Sr. (father of film star Grace Kelly) and uncle, John B. Kelly Jr., were both Olympic medalists, with Kelly Sr. winning three gold medals. Prince Albert himself competed in five Winter Olympics in bobsleigh between 1988 and 2002, and later married Princess Charlene, a member of the South African Olympic swimming team, in 2000.
Princess Charlene and Prince Albert II recently made history by carrying the Olympic torch as a family when they took part in the relay in Monaco with their twins, Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques.
