Daniel Cormier: 'I don't know how Conor didn't realise he was going too far'
In a recent episode Good guy/bad guy Cormier, along with Chael Sonnen, responded to new audio of the McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov fight that has been circulating online.
” [Khabib] “He felt disrespected by the comments he made about his family, his father and everything else. He felt disrespected even by that action because he didn't want Conor McGregor to feel entitled,” Cormier said. “I was close with him. [Khabib] sometimes [Conor] I knew this rivalry and this fight was going to go in a different direction because he started talking about his father and saying negative things. The one thing you definitely shouldn't do in that regard is talk about their father. [Khabib’s] In the culture, the father is held in such high esteem that attacking him makes the whole village or community a target for attack…
“So he not only insulted Khabib and his father,” Cormier continued, “he really insulted the man who was the father of the fighters from Dagestan, because he put so much into those young athletes. That fight was full of emotion… I just couldn't understand why that happened.” [Conor] I didn't realise he was overdoing it.”
Nurmagomedov will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame alongside Cormier in 2022. As for McGregor, he is targeting a return to the Octagon against Michael Chandler later this year.
