The Martial Arts Open School Project, launched by AJTKD and UNESCO-ICM, aims to empower 200 underprivileged youth in Rio through Taekwondo training.
On July 6, the Association of Jadir Taekwondo (AJTKD) in partnership with the UNESCO-sponsored International Youth Development and Participation Martial Arts Center (UNESCO ICM) launched the Martial Arts Open School Project at Madureira Park in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The initiative aims to benefit 200 participants from underprivileged areas of Rio by providing them with the opportunity to participate in taekwondo training.
The project aims to improve the physical fitness, discipline and self-esteem of young people and local residents. By providing comprehensive training sessions, guidance and support, the programme aims to equip participants with both martial arts skills and essential life skills.
AJTKD's Secretary General Danilo expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “Our collaboration with UNESCO ICM highlights the importance of sport in promoting sustainable development and community cohesion. We are convinced that the Martial Arts Open School will have a positive impact on the lives of the participants.”
AJTKD is known for its mission of using taekwondo as a tool for social inclusion and environmental sustainability, and its efforts have been recognized internationally: In 2022, the organization received a BBC Green Sport Award for its efforts in incorporating environmentally friendly practices into sports programs.
The Martial Arts Open School project aims to provide quality sports education and opportunities to underserved areas of Rio de Janeiro. The launch of the project is a testament to the power of partnerships and the role of sport in bringing about positive social change.
