Eddie Hearn has seen a lot in his career as a boxing promoter and believes he has a pretty good idea of what to expect on Saturday.
Matchroom Boxing chairman Hearn said he believes the only chance Mike Perry has of beating Jake Paul in a boxing match is outside the obvious rules.
“(Perry's only chance) is to break his leg,” Hearn told DAZN, which is broadcasting the fight on pay-per-view from Tampa, Fla. “Mike Perry is a welterweight fighter, I think he was a middleweight at UFC. This fight is at 200 pounds. He has no chance whatsoever. Mike Perry is a really tough guy, by the way, and at 160-170 pounds, it's probably going to take a toll on his right arm. But you can't give up 30 pounds.”
“Jake's not a great fighter, but he's big, he's strong and he can throw a few punches. I think he can stop Mike Perry.”
Paul was next scheduled to fight former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, but the fight was postponed when Tyson suffered a recurrence of an ulcer. Instead, Paul booked the admittedly risky bout with Perry to keep him busy until Tyson was ready.
The Tyson fight has been rescheduled to Nov. 15 from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to be streamed live on Netflix, but Hearn already believes the Tyson fight will fall through anyway.
“The Jake Paul machine works when it comes to big fights,” Hearn said. “There's interest in Mike Perry and if a Mike Tyson fight were to happen, which I don't think it will, I'm sure it would be big numbers.”
“But he needs a dance partner. He's torn between being a boxer and being an influencer. He'll make more money fighting an influencer. He wants credibility in boxing, but he doesn't want to have a proper boxing match. Part of him wants to establish himself and gain credibility as a boxer, but he can't fight anyone that's very good because he'll lose.”
