According to multiple reports, Penn State football's Whiteout game against the University of Washington will not start at noon. Former Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg was suggested The match kicks off at 3:30 p.m. John Sauber of the Centre Daily Times report The games are scheduled for 3:30 or 7 p.m.
Reacting to the news that Washington is the Whiteout opponent, Hackenberg said in an Instagram video, “I couldn't be more excited to welcome the Washington Huskies to the Big Ten and experience our first game at Beaver Stadium. A dark and scary second half begins at 3:30pm.”
Finding an opponent and lining up TV schedules to get the Whiteout to kick off in the early evening has been a challenge, with James Franklin saying in June, “If we want to provide the opponents, the experience and the time slot that our fan base wants and expects, it's going to take a lot of pushing and pulling and compromise and working with the conference and the TV networks and trying to find a win-win for everybody.”
“I think I'm like the fans: We want it all. And you rarely get it all in life,” Franklin continued. “The time slot issue is really complicated by when they choose to have the primetime games.”
Penn State's whiteout games usually air at 7:30 p.m., but the rise of FOX's Big Noon Kickoff production has meant the Big Ten's best games are often broadcast earlier in the morning. Penn State has opted to play weaker opponents in previous whiteouts to avoid midday games, and the show appears to have been able to avoid playing against Illinois in order to air at least some of the game against a nighttime sky.
