Which soccer team won the Olympics? You might be surprised by what we reveal.
The history of men's Olympic soccer dates back to 1900. That year's Olympics were held in Paris, as will the 2024 Summer Olympics. With such a rich history, the Olympic soccer tournament offers the opportunity for a variety of countries to participate. A total of 19 countries have won gold medals in men's soccer. Some of these countries no longer exist. Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany have each won Olympic gold medals in men's soccer.
Six countries have won Olympic gold medals multiple times. Hungary and Great Britain lead the way in Olympic history with three victories. But those were all long ago. Great Britain, for example, won in 1900, 1908, and 1912. Hungary has also won back-to-back championships, with the Hungarian national team bringing home gold in 1952, 1964, and 1968. The Soviet Union has won twice, and three South American countries have won back-to-back championships: Uruguay won in 1924 and 1928. More recently, Argentina won back-to-back gold medals in 2004 and 2008, the latter with Lionel Messi. Then in 2016, Brazil won on home soil, with Neymar scoring the winning goal from a penalty kick, and in 2020, the Selecao won back-to-back titles.

Women's Soccer Gold Medalist
The history of women's Olympic soccer is shorter than that of the men's. However, the rapid growth of women's soccer has led to a number of great tournaments. This is especially true for fans of the U.S. Women's National Team. Women's soccer began as an Olympic sport at the Atlanta Games in 1996. This means that there have been seven Olympic Games to date, with Paris 2024 being the eighth.
The U.S. Women's National Team has won gold four times and only missed out on a medal once. Brazil and Sweden have been runners-up twice, but neither were able to win gold. Sweden has won gold in the past two tournaments, in 2016 and 2020, while Brazil has won back-to-back silver medals in 2004 and 2008.
