Miesha Tate has ended her iconic rivalry with Ronda Rousey.
Without these two former UFC bantamweight champions, it's likely that the UFC would never have added a woman to its roster in 2013, which was inevitable. Rousey defeated Tate in the first round with her signature armbar to become Strikeforce champion, but the company was later absorbed into UFC, and a rematch was eventually arranged. Rousey won again with an armbar in the third round, ending the rivalry, but the bad blood remained.
Rousey's fight against Tate was her second defence as UFC champion, but she ultimately shed that label in harsh fashion when she was knocked out by Holly Holm in the second round at UFC 193 in November 2015. Rousey, 37, recently claimed in media promotion for her new book that she has suffered from concussions throughout her life, some as early as age 6. The “brawler” also said she feels “vilified” by the sport, a claim Tate disagrees.
“I personally don't have the same animosity toward Ronda that I once had,” Tate told SiriusXM's MMA. “The disdain and frustration I felt, I've moved past that, acknowledged my shortcomings and worked to become a better person. I wish I could say I've seen the same growth with Ronda, but I don't think so. She continues to hold on to resentment, frustration and anger, and it seems to dictate her next actions.”
“I don't think a large part of the MMA community has ever turned their back on Ronda.”
Although Rousey received a lot of negative feedback and backlash for how she handled the two losses that ended her MMA career, she was one of the most important and influential figures in the sport, inspiring many fighters to pursue their dreams and compete.
From Tate's perspective, Rousey's comments are likely to elicit more negative reactions than positive ones.
“She forgot that there are hundreds of thousands of girls all over the world who still adore her,” Tate said, “and they didn't care if she won or lost, they thought she was amazing either way.”
“I don't think she's where I'd like her to be yet. I think she's still very hurt by it, but I think she's still focused on herself, not on her own growth. I think she's still focused on, 'Well, this happened to me. Everyone attacked me. I had a concussion and nobody thought of me.' Oh wait, that's not true. You get beaten down a little bit. That's what fame comes with. No one is immune in life, especially when life is measured on a scale where everyone witnesses your failures as much as they witness your successes. But that happens to all champions. This isn't a Ronda Rousey vs. the world situation. When you're great, people just want to see that greatness fail.”
Rousey continued to face backlash following her retirement from MMA, returning to professional wrestling shortly after retiring in early 2017. Tate retired before Rousey after losing a unanimous decision to current champion Raquel Pennington, but returned in 2021.
Either way, Rousey left fans of her era with plenty of memories.
“Most of the people are healthy people who were living their lives rooting for her and hoping for her continued success and enjoying it,” Tate said. “It feels like those people are being forgotten, and that's kind of sad.”
