Joyce looked destined to compete for a world title after beating rival Daniel Dubois in 2020 and then rattling off three more wins, including a victory over former world champion Joseph Parker. However, losses in back-to-back bouts to Zhang Jie Lei started to derail his trajectory, but Joyce has since begun his rebuild with a points decision over Kash Ali.
Announcing the bout, promoter Frank Warren said: “This is a genuine old-fashioned heavyweight bout that has been a long time in the making. I remember there was a lot of talk about this fight before I teamed up with Joe and to me it just seemed a natural and natural fit. It's sure to be a fierce battle with two of London's best heavyweight boxers fighting for the top spot. The winner will be right back in the fight but the loser will have nowhere to go.”
