Fargo (KVRR) – Mikhaila McField is a multi-sport star who competes in hockey, shot put, and hammer throw. This 10-year-old girl has dominated all of these sports.
“They make me happy. I'm a good sport and it's just fun. I love winning,” McField said.
She will represent North Dakota at the International Hockey Series in Paris, France. She is the only player selected to play on the boys' team from the state. McField will face off against tough opponents from around the world.
In hockey, she plays as a defender on the boys' team. She explains why she prefers playing defense compared to other players who prefer scoring.
“I like defense because I get to hit guys the ball. It's a lot of fun. I get to make plays and see the ice. It's really cool. I love it,” McField said.
It's not just her play on the ice that's garnering attention: The 10-year-old recently took up the shot put, winning a bronze medal at regionals and qualifying for the Junior Olympics. However, she is new to the sport and has yet to master the technique of spinning in the shot put.
“So if I can learn to spin, I think I can probably win,” McField said.
While his focus is on the hockey tournament in Paris and the Junior Olympics, McField knows he has an opportunity in front of him to experience the sport he loves outside of North America.
“I've actually never performed outside of Canada or the U.S., so I think it's going to be a really cool experience, being exposed to other languages, other foods, everything else,” McField said.
McField will be playing hockey in Paris this week before competing in the Junior Olympics AAU in Greensboro, North Carolina, from July 29-Aug. 3.
