The Ohio State men's ice hockey team has added Carter Kier to its staff, associate head coach Steve Roerick announced on Thursday. Kier served on the staff of the USHL's Fargo Force for the past four seasons. He was originally the goaltending coach for the 2020-21 season and served as assistant coach and goaltending coach the past two seasons.
The Force won the Clark Cup last season as USHL playoff champions, will win the Anderson Cup in 2023 and 2024 as the league's regular season champions, and has reached the Clark Cup Finals in 2021 and 2023. Kier coached his goaltenders to All-USHL and USHL Goaltender of the Year honors and the second-longest shutout streak in USHL playoff history. A whopping eight of the team's goaltenders have earned NCAA Division I scholarships. He also served as an assistant coach for Team USA in the World Junior A Challenge, where the team won a bronze medal.
“I am excited to welcome Carter to our staff,” Roerick said in a statement. “He has done an outstanding job with the Fargo Force over the last four years, including a championship game last season. His work ethic, drive and passion for the game will be a great asset to our program.”
A native of Moorhead, Minnesota, Clear will graduate from North Dakota State in August 2022 with a bachelor's degree in communications.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to join Coach Rohrick and his staff at Ohio State,” said Clear, “and look forward to building relationships with all of the current players and alumni of the program. I couldn't be more excited to be on campus!”

Nothing speaks more than the words of those who have worked with you, and when others speak of the impact Crier has had, it also becomes a winning pillar.
“Ohio State has acquired a truly outstanding player in Carter Clear,” said Fargo Force Director of Hockey Operations and General Manager Cary Eades. “You only need to look at how the team has reached the Clark Cup Finals three out of four times in the four years he has been with the team to see that. The impact he has had on the team is particularly evident as the goalies he has developed have been key to our success. Carter is extremely dedicated and is much more than just a 'goalie coach'. For example, last season he was instrumental in leading the Force penalty kick unit, which was number one in the USHL throughout the season. He also has a proven track record of scouting and recruiting young prospects. Carter's future is bright and we wish him continued success with Coach Rohrick and the Buckeyes.”
