Saudi Arabian boxing strongman Turki Ararcik believes Jaron Ennis has the potential to make it big in the boxing world, and he has suggested on social media that a junior middleweight bout between Ennis and pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford be organised “soon”.
Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs), 27, of Philadelphia, defeated David Avanesyan (30-5-1, 18 KOs), 35, of Nottinghamshire, England, in five rounds at his homecoming in Philadelphia on Saturday. It was his first fight since signing with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, and his performance clearly caught Alarcik's attention.
“I reached out to boxers Jaron Ennis and Eddie Hearn to congratulate him on his win. I can't wait to see Ennis fight Crawford at 154 pounds,” Alarczyk tweeted.
Ennis' promoter, Eddie Hearn, also expressed confidence in the fight, but made it clear that it would probably take place in 2025. Hearn suggested that Ennis' next fight this fall would not be against Crawford.
“He'll probably move to No. 54 at some point,” Hahn said, “but he doesn't really want to move until he's done with business.”
Hearn spoke with Alarczyk about a possible matchup between Ennis and Crawford. Ennis, who was sitting next to Hearn, quickly chimed in: “Send me the contract.” Hearn recounted his conversation with Alarczyk: “I said to His Excellency, if you want, we could fight in the main event on November 24, 2017. [Dmitrii] Biborg[Artur] Beterbiev appears in October [Saudi Arabia]Or you can come back here [Philadelphia].”
There are other subplots to consider, too: ESPN's Mike Coppinger reported that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is targeting a “busy” type of bout in Los Angeles in the fall and may be working toward a “mega-fight” with Crawford in 2025.
Many of Crawford's future plans and options hinge on his upcoming WBA junior middleweight title fight against current titleholder Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles on August 3. In any case, Ennis has been keeping a low profile as Saudi Arabia, the world's largest fight sponsor, has expressed interest in making the bout happen.
