IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (32-0, 29 KOs) used his overwhelming size advantage to defeat challenger David Avanesyan (30-5-1, 18 KOs) by doctor’s stoppage in the fifth round on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
Ennis knocked Avanesyan down with a counter left punch in the fifth round. After the round, the ringside doctor ordered the fight to be stopped. Avanesyan had swelling over his left eye and on the left side of his cheek. The fight was stopped at the three-minute mark of the fifth round.
Undercard results:
– Welterweight prospect Jalil Hackett (9-0, 7 KOs) won via 10-round unanimous decision. Peter Dobson (16-2, 9 KOs). The scores were 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94. Of the three scores, the more accurate was 96-94.
The 21-year-old Hackett was tough to hit, showed no strength and didn't have impressive hand speed.
– WBC World Women's Featherweight Champion Skye Nicholson (11-0, 1 KO) won by decision in 10 rounds. Diana Vargas (19-2, 12 KOs). The 28-year-old Nicholson was on the move throughout the bout, landing punches and staying in the clinch.
Little changed in her bout, but that's just how it always is: Vargas closed the distance, and Nicholson quickly tied it. The scores were 100-90, 100-90, 100-90.
