When the former mixed martial artist became paralyzed from the waist down, he vowed to return to the beach once he was able to walk again. But then he met a woman named Marte and everything changed.
Sad incident
GK has always been physical. As a professional mixed martial artist, he trained hard and took pride in keeping his body in shape. He even owned his own gym in Norway, where he lived. But one day in 2021, he dove headfirst into the water and tragedy struck. The water was too shallow for him to dive headfirst, and there were concrete stones at the bottom. As a result, GK broke two bones in his spine.
At the time, he was left paralyzed from the chest down, despite undergoing quick surgery, and he and his supporters have called for better signage at the beach where the accident occurred to prevent future injuries, while he has vowed never to end his life in a wheelchair.
“The doctors say I'll never go again but I'm going. I can't imagine life in a wheelchair. It's surreal,” he said. Today's World News on the phone.
A vital relationship
GK was depressed and vowed not to return to the beach until he could walk again. Some days he spent six hours recovering, a painful and slow process. One day, he sent a direct message to a social media influencer named Marte and was inspired.
“His goal was to walk,” she recalls. Magically News“That was his only focus every day.”
The two fell in love, but Marthe wanted to travel. She had always explored the world alone, and she wanted GK to come with her. Eventually, she convinced him, and they began traveling together through Norway.
Suddenly, GK started living in the moment instead of dreaming of a possible future that was no longer realistic. A world of possibilities opened up and he started doing things he never thought possible, like driving a motorbike and riding a horse.
“I was doing all this crazy stuff and then all of a sudden she came into my life,” he said. “I [travel] As if being in a wheelchair was what made it possible.”
A change of perspective
As he began his journey, GK began to feel grateful for the opportunities and life he had, and he realized he could inspire others.
“We had a plan in our heads,” he said. “Let's show people that it's possible.”
Earlier this year, GK and Marte launched a new social media channel called “Perspective By Us.” The first video shows Marte taking GK in his wheelchair to a place he said he would never visit again until he could walk: the beach.
In the video, Marte hoists GK on his back and the two enter the water together — the perfect start to a life full of adventure, possibility and inspiration.
“No one would ever understand how far we went to get here,” they wrote in another video of the couple enjoying a waterfall together, “but here we are.”
Have the Right Mindset
Life isn't always fair and hard times happen to good people too. It can be incredibly difficult to get out of a dark situation, especially when it means changing the way you go about your life. But GK and Marte are proof that it's possible if you first change your mindset.
This powerful story is a great reminder to all of us that we can overcome hardships if we remember to think about what we have and live in the present. Circumstances change and the life we thought we would live may not be what we had in mind, but that doesn't mean we aren't living a life worth living to the fullest.
Especially when we surround ourselves with love and support, like this inspirational man did.
