Former NBA player Jontay Porter pleaded guilty Wednesday to a wire fraud conspiracy charge in a case stemming from a gambling scheme and was released on $250,000 bail, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York said.
“The estimated sentencing guidelines are 41 to 51 months, with a maximum sentence of 20 years for the wire fraud conspiracy charge,” a spokesperson told CNN in an email. Porter's bail was signed by his wife and mother, the spokesperson said.
A spokesman confirmed that Porter's guilty plea was linked to a gambling case also involving four others, one of whom was accused in a federal indictment filed last month of conspiring with three others to use inside information about NBA players to defraud sports-betting companies by betting on those players' performances.
The complaint referred to the player as “Player 1,” but CNN determined that the player was Porter, who played for the Toronto Raptors at the time but was banned from the NBA in April for violating the league's gambling rules.
Porter's lawyer, Jeff Jensen, said he had “nothing to add to my previous comments about this case.” Jensen has not yet responded to CNN's requests for comment.
Porter is scheduled to be sentenced on December 18, according to the Eastern District of New York.
