Winwood is scheduled to face unbeaten Thai boxer and current WBA minimumweight super title champion Tammanoon Niyomtrong in Perth on September 7.
Australian sensation Alex Winwood has made Australian boxing history by booking a place in a world title fight at HBF Stadium in Perth on September 7.
The 4-0 boxer from Bunbury will face Thailand's Tammanoon Niyomtrong, also known by the ring name “Knockout CP Freshmart”, for the WBA minimumweight super title belt, looking to break Jeff Fenech's record of seven consecutive world title wins set in 1985.
Niyomtrong boasts an unbeaten record of 24 fights and has successfully defended his title 11 times since winning it in 2016.
This is currently the longest title reign in boxing.
Since making his professional debut in November 2022, Winwood has built his resume with a TKO win over Thibo Monavesa, unanimous decision victories over highly-rated Chris Ganoza and recent WBO World title challenger Rainerys Gutierrez, winning the WBC International title in the process.
On Saturday, Mr Winwood was named NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year for his achievements and impact on the community.
“This is just the beginning of my legend in boxing and I hope to make Australia proud and inspire the next generation of boxers,” the 27-year-old said ahead of what will be the biggest test of his career.
Winwood said in just his fifth professional fight, his dream is “right there.”
“Right now, life is like a dream and I'm just enjoying every moment,” he said.
“I've only been a pro for less than two years… I always want to play against the best.”
“That's what I've said from the beginning, but it's kind of surreal to actually be here so I'm just going to cherish every moment and get the job done when September 7th comes.”
Winwood was scheduled to fight Mexico's Luis Castillo in a world title bout in June, but the bout was canceled.
The September date was made possible through promoters Dragon Fire Boxing and Paradigm Entertainment in association with former world champion Danny Green.
Winwood's world title bout will be the first time a Western Australian talent has competed on home soil since Green more than a decade ago.
Green said Wednesday that Winwood is “the real deal” and “without a doubt” is a future unified world champion and a role model for the entire community.
“He's explosive, he's strong, he's very skilled. His fundamentals are second to none. He has it all,” he said.
“And I think when the Australian people see him, when they get a chance to watch this young man play, they're going to be just as excited as I am.”
Winwood's manager, Tony Torzi, said his player is “destined for greatness.”
Former AFL footballer and Paradigm Entertainment director Des Hedland, who broke the news of Winwood's title fight along with trainer Angelo Hyder and Western Australian Premier Roger Cook, said he was “given goosebumps” to Winwood's chance to win the title in front of a huge home crowd.
“Alex is a special talent, not just inside the boxing ring but outside of it as well.”
“It's huge what he's trying to do for our community and the example he's setting and he's going to do it here in the Whadjuk region of Perth and we'll all be coming out to support him… it's going to be a great event.”
“I’m really looking forward to him standing before his family, the whole of Western Australia and the Noongar community here in Perth.
“He's an incredible talent and will be the next world champion – and the fastest of all time.”
History awaits on September 7th. Tickets go on sale on Monday 15th July at TIckemaster Australia.
