Floresville, Texas – The 19-year-old professional boxer from San Antonio remained undefeated after being knocked out in the first round last weekend.
Super flyweight prospect David Cardenas faced Steven Angeles Cruz in a six-round boxing bout sponsored by TMB Promotions.
After some brief probing in the opening minutes of the first round, Cardenas landed a devastating blow to Cruz's body.
Cruz was unable to get up and the bout ended with 2 minutes, 13 seconds left in the first round.
“I landed a big body shot and he went down. I was especially happy to get the knockout in the first round, as I had fought this opponent for a full round earlier in my career,” Cardenas said in a news release.
With the win, Cardenas' boxing record improves to 7-0, with five of his wins coming by knockout.
According to a press release from South Park Boxing Academy, Cardenas is quickly becoming a household name in the Alamo City and has strong ties with San Antonio Spurs power forward Keldon Johnson.
“I'm going to make a name for myself in San Antonio and be a big name coming out of this city. Bam Rodriguez and Mario Barrios paved the way and, with God's help, I'm going to fight behind them,” Cardenas said.
Cardenas' next fight is scheduled for Aug. 24 at Alzafar Shrine Temple in San Antonio.
