Denver – The University of Denver hockey program had five players named All-Americans of the Year by the United States Hockey Coaches Association for the 2023-24 season.
Sophomore Defense Kent Andersonfreshman defenseman Boston Back BurgerJunior Goalkeeper Matt DavisJunior Forward Carter King and freshman forward Alex Weiermaier These are pioneers whose excellence in the classroom has been recognized by the AHCA: 38 players were honored from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, with DU receiving five, the second-highest number of award recipients in the league.
To be eligible, student-athletes had to achieve a grade point average of at least 3.75 each semester or quarter and play in 40 percent of their team's games. Exceptions were made for injured players and backup goalies.
Both Davis and King earned All-American Scholar honors for the third consecutive year, while Anderson, an NCAA Elite 90 winner in the 2024 Frozen Four, was selected for the second time. Buckberger and Weiermeier were named DU Athletics' Scholar-Athletes of the Year after having the highest grade-point averages in the school's freshman class.
These five players were also named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and received the NCHC Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award. Anderson, Davis and King were also named to the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District Team and were finalists for the organization's All-America award.
In all, 638 NCAA Division I men’s (343) and women’s (295) athletes were honored as AHCA All-Academic Scholars for the 2023-24 school year.
