Former Furman University Soccer Player Selected for U.S. Men's Soccer Olympic Team
Former Furman University men's soccer star Walker Zimmerman, a 2023 Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, was named to the U.S. Men's Soccer Olympic Team for the 2024 Paris Olympics, it was announced Monday. The team, which will compete in the under-23 tournament, will feature three “wild card” overage players, including the 31-year-old Zimmerman, fellow defender Myles Robinson and midfielder Djordje Mihalovic. A two-time All-American and two-time All-SoCon selection and the 2011 SoCon Freshman of the Year during his two-year tenure with the Furman University men's soccer team, Zimmerman helped lead the U.S. to the final tournament at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. A Lawrenceville, Georgia native and former captain of the U.S. men's national team, Zimmerman has been named to the MLS Best XI five times and has twice won the MLS Defender of the Year award. Zimmerman, a defender for MLS' Nashville SC, is in his 12th season of professional soccer. The U.S. will train in Bordeaux and Marseille, France, this month before playing France in its Group A opener on July 24. Zimmerman will lead the U.S. team in group matches against New Zealand (July 27) and Guinea (July 30). The gold medal game is scheduled for Aug. 9 in Paris.
