While retirement talks have been put on hold for now, former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier is ready to make a return.

One of the most popular fighters on the UFC roster, “The Diamond” is fresh off a failed third attempt at the UFC's undisputed championship, submitting current UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in the final round of the UFC 302 main event.
Poirier suggested to Joe Rogan shortly after his loss to Makhachev that he might be ready to hang up the gloves, but with the 35-year-old Rogan recently backing away from those plans it now appears he's keen to get back in the cage soon.

While Makhachev has already dismissed requests for a rematch, some fans have been quick to suggest that a second bout with Max Holloway or a trilogy bout with Justin Gaethje would be the ideal pairings for what could be Poirier's final fight.
Holloway and Gaethje shared the cage earlier this year in a “BMF” title bout in the co-main event bout at UFC 300, with “Blessed” defeating the defending champion in the last second, but despite holding the “BMF” belt, it looks like Holloway will now face UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria.

It hasn't been revealed when Gaethje plans to return to the cage following his loss to Holloway, but a third bout between Gaethje and Poirier could be one of the few non-title fights UFC considers as a pay-per-view main event.
