Artyom Levshunov's new contract is great news for the Chicago Blackhawks, but not so great for the Michigan State University hockey team, reports CHN's Nate Brown.
While it was likely he would have gone pro, Spartans fans expected him to stay at MSU for one more season. They are an exceptional team with a big contribution from Detroit prospect Trey Augustin at goaltending.
Speaking at Detroit's development camp this week, Augustin said he would have liked Refshunoff to stay but understood the situation. He was pleased that Refshunoff was acquired by the Chicago Blackhawks with the second overall pick.
“It's been really great to watch,” Augustin said. “He's a great kid, a great person. Off-ice stuff, watching him grow as a citizen and get better every year with language and stuff. It's been really cool to watch.”
Refshunoff will likely start for Rockford in the AHL, but he is clearly more polished than some of the players selected in the draft.
“I just think [he’s] “It's the total package,” Davidson said after drafting him last Thursday in Las Vegas. “Offensively, he can drive the offense, he can skate, he's mobile, he's big, he's an aggressive, physical defender and we think he still has a lot of room to grow. So not only is he a package, he's still got the potential to grow. It was very intriguing and we really felt like our organization would be better off with him.”

Red Wings offseason
For those trying to sort out the options for Detroit having four goalies with NHL experience, keep in mind that sending an NHL player to the AHL on a one-way contract doesn't give you a dollar-for-dollar salary cap relief. For example, if the Red Wings put Ville Husso on waivers and no one claims him, he would receive a $4.75 million salary cap hit. However, that doesn't remove the full amount from the Red Wings' salary cap. They would receive the NHL minimum contract amount ($775,000) plus $375,000. Thus, the salary cap relief would only be $1.15 million.
