Keyshawn Davis' rival Miguel Madueno accidentally punched the referee.
Davis was looking to maintain his unbeaten record on the undercard of a lackluster Shakur Stevenson-Artem Harutyunan victory in Newark.
The talented young star has been praised by boxing legend Floyd Mayweather as having “everything” to reach the top of the sport.
But his latest victory was far from perfect, as he was forced into a hard-fought battle with a formidable opponent, Madueno, who showed no signs of giving up.
The bout became heated after the bell rang to signal the end of the sixth round.
The two men clashed and the atmosphere in the ring was extremely hostile and visibly angry.
They shoved and pushed each other, and Davis raised his hands and threw rapid punches at his rival.
Madueno then tried to fight back with a left hand, but was pulled back and the punch landed on the referee.
The umpire stumbled backwards for a moment after taking the shot to the face, but regained his composure.
Madueno was not penalized or disqualified because his shot did not hit the intended target.
The controversy didn't end there, as Davis was lifted off the floor in a WWE-esque move mid-round.
The referee quickly called the bout off, but it was clear there was no love or feeling of defeat between the two sides.
Davis ended up winning, with the judges scoring the bout unanimously in his favor.
The former Olympic silver medallist is now unbeaten in 11 fights in his professional career.
“The Businessman” will continue to climb to the top and we can expect to see great things from him in the future.
Opportunities will continue to arise for Davis, who has previously trained alongside boxing giant Mayweather.
And he revealed that the retired star had some big words of praise for him when giving him advice.
He said: “Floyd's always helping people out in the gym. I was in the gym with my brother, Kelvin Davis, and he helped us both out.”
“You learn so much just by being around him. I've been blessed.”
“He told me, 'Keyshawn, you have it all,' 'You have the skills, you have the ability, you have it all,'”
“He said the only person who can beat him is someone who is more conditioned, so always make sure you stay conditioned.”
