Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two icons of modern cricket in the Indian team, bid farewell to the shortest format of the international cricket game after the team lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy. While Kohli and Rohit will continue to play T20 cricket for their respective Indian Premier League franchises, their focus remains ODI and Test cricket on the international stage. But something epic happened when the duo met Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with India head coach Rahul Dravid and other members of the T20 World Cup winning Indian team.
During his conversation with PM Modi, Dravid said that “youngsters” Rohit and Kohli will play for India in the 2028 Olympics, eliciting a sharp response from the PM.
“Modiji, we cricketers don't get a chance to participate in the Olympics. But now cricket will be a part of the Olympics. It will mean a lot for the cricketers, the country and the cricket board. We have to perform well in the tournament and it will be great to come together with other sportspersons and learn from them. I think it is a proud moment that cricket will be a part of the Olympics,” Dravid said.
Virat couldn't stop laughing upon hearing this and his reaction said it all about his views on international cricket today.
The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles will see the long-awaited return of cricket after 128 years, albeit in the shortest format.
“I am sure that BCCI, players and coaching staff will be ready at that time. I am sure many people from this team will be a part of it. Winning an Olympic gold medal will be a great pride and joy. We need to be fully prepared for it,” Dravid further said.
