NEW YORK (AP) — Lionel Messi and Argentina will be looking to match Spain's feat of winning three consecutive major titles when the Copa America begins Thursday night.
Messi, who won the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup, will be four days shy of his 37th birthday when the Albiceleste take on Canada at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
“I want to enjoy a few more games as world champions,” Messi said after Argentina beat France on penalties to win the 2022 World Cup final.
He has scored 10 goals in 10 international appearances since then, taking his total to 108 goals in 182 appearances for Argentina. Depending on whether the Iranian's controversial goal counts, he is either tied for second with Ali Daei or one behind Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 128 goals.
“It's not easy to compete again after winning everything,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said.
Argentina and Uruguay are tied with 15 Copa titles each, followed by Brazil with nine. No other country has ever won it more than once.
Brazil boasts an attacking line spearheaded by Vinicius Junior, Rodrigo and Rafinha, both fresh from winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, and a rising star in 17-year-old Endric, who will join Real Madrid this summer.
“No matter what position you look at in the starting 11 that they propose, they're probably some of the best players in the world,” U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter said.
Spain are the only country to have won three consecutive major titles, having won European Championships in 2008 and 2012 and the World Cup in 2010.
Tournament details:
Extended Fields
As in 2016, there will be 16 participating teams. The United States, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Panama and Jamaica will join the 10 South American nations, having qualified from North, Central America and the Caribbean.
Back in America
Ecuador was set to host the tournament on a rotating basis by South American football's governing body CONMEBOL, but declined, and the tournament was subsequently moved to the United States, which also hosted a special centennial tournament in 2016, with Chile beating Argentina on penalties at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Eleven NFL stadiums will be used, including eight of the 11 2026 World Cup sites in the United States and three smaller MLS venues. The final will be held on July 14 in Miami Gardens, Florida, kicking off five hours after the European Championship final in Berlin.
CONMEBOL said more than 1 million tickets were sold for the 32 matches. Just under 1.5 million people watched the 2016 tournament, and about 850,000 in Brazil in 2019. The 2021 Copa was played largely behind closed doors because of the coronavirus pandemic.
American Team
This will be the U.S. team's biggest pre-World Cup test, as the U.S. automatically qualifies as co-host along with Mexico and Canada, and most of its Europe-based players are expected to miss next year's CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie will form the core of a squad that sees the return of 18 players from the 2022 World Cup squad.
“Having a World Cup in our home country is probably the biggest thing that's ever happened in our careers,” Pulisic said. “It's a special time for the sport in America.”
World Cup test?
In 2016, CONMEBOL partnered with the United States Soccer Federation to handle most of the organization of the tournament, and this time, CONMEBOL will co-host the tournament with CONCACAF, the governing body for North, Central America and the Caribbean.
Unlike the World Cup, organizers will only be able to use the venue for a short period of time: the Hard Rock is scheduled to host a concert on July 6, between the final group game and the final, and new grass will also be laid.
At MetLife Stadium, where the semifinal will be held on July 9, staff will watch it as a preview of the World Cup final on July 19, 2026. The stadium has a camera system designed by Areconto Vision and managed by Genetec Security Center that was installed before the 2014 Super Bowl, and a new system from Axis Communications with 80 8K, 41-megapixel cameras will be installed in the stands this summer.
“We can see every seat at all times, which we think is a good deterrent,” said Daniel Dell'Orenzi, vice president of security and safety services. “We have three drone detection systems. … Not only can we track the drone, but more importantly, we can track where the pilot is.”
