Future Hall of Famer Gennady Golovkin has said he would definitely consider a rematch if a Saudi boxing league were to form. As fans have read, Saudi power brokers have said they want to shake up the boxing landscape by consolidating rival promotional companies under one umbrella. Some are skeptical that this will happen, but others are optimistic.
But Triple G said he's “never say never” about returning if the Saudi Arabian league goes ahead. Golovkin, who was recently named president of Kazakhstan's Olympic Committee, is now 42 and feels “great.”
“If there was an interesting offer, would I be interested? Of course there is a lot of interest,” GGG told Reuters. “Never say never. Let's see. I'm very happy where I am, I feel great, I'm doing great, if something comes up I'll consider it.”
Golovkin already has the credentials to be one of the greats of the modern era and has nothing to prove by fighting again. That being said, we fans would love to see a rematch between the former middleweight champion. Last seen losing in a trilogy against Canelo Alvarez, he certainly looked slower and a little faded in his September 2022 bout, but he was still durable and physically solid. Who knows how powerful Golovkin could be if he returns sometime this year or next at 160 or 168 pounds (the weight GGG fought at in his third bout with Canelo).
GGG has never been stopped and has always displayed a great chin, which would likely work in his favor if they were to fight again. Golovkin (42-2-1 D) (37) last won in April 2022, stopping Ryota Murata in Japan for a pretty good result. Could Golovkin come back and win another world title? Probably.
Many great artists have been unable to escape the irresistible temptation to make a comeback, and GGG now joins that long list.
