The Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team is going to look very different next season. Remember the transfer that took place in March after the 2023-24 season? The sky is about to come crashing down for head coach Mike Young, and some say he should be fired immediately.
The truth was much simpler. Welcome to the modern era of college sports. After each season, players sell to other teams as free agents while other schools work behind the scenes to “recruit” veteran players. Basketball, with its much smaller rosters, is in a worse position than football. Virginia Tech wasn't the only team to take a hit this spring.
The question was how Young would respond. He was aggressive. The Hokies had acquired multiple players through the portal, one of whom they had already lost after Young took more NIL money from elsewhere. Sorry, but it's true.
Tech's 2024-25 roster has been set, and if you haven't been paying attention recently, you probably only recognize a few players from last season's roster: Mirijael Poteet, Brandon Rechsteiner, Jaedon Young and Patrick Wessler.
Virginia Tech recently announced their team's uniform numbers for next season, and before you ask, Poteet (No. 34) and Wessler (No. 5) are not included as they are not changing their uniform numbers.
Below is a list of the new jersey numbers, including the number changes for Rechsteiner and Young: This list also includes the Virginia Tech freshman jersey numbers.
