CBN Promotions president Alex Camponovo acknowledges it won't be easy for Miguel Madueno to beat 2020 Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis on Saturday (July 6), but he thinks Madueno has a chance to be more than a puncher in the 10-round bout.
The 25-year-old Madueno (31-2, 28 KOs) comes into the bout riding high from a 10-round split decision victory over Justin Pauld on Probox TV in February, after moving up to junior welterweight to face Steve Clagett and losing by unanimous decision at the same distance.
Davis (10-0, 7 KOs), also 25, has been rising through the rankings since defeating former two-division champion Jose Pedraza by knockout in February, but his majority decision win over Nahir Albright in October was called off after he tested positive for marijuana.
“Of course,” Camponovo said when asked if he thought Madueno could win. “I took this fight because I thought Madueno could win. He's had a different type of training camp.”
Madueno has had a solid career on the regional circuit but has stumbled in two of his three step-up bouts, including a loss to former titleholder Jezreel Corrales in 2022. Camponovo remains confident and sees Madueno's win over Pauldo as a turning point: “If he'd had a few more amateur fights and better coaching very early in his career, I think he could have done better.” [it would have helped]” Camponovo said.
“Madueno is one of Mexico's hidden talents,” Camponovo added. “It's taken him a long time to reinvent his career a little bit. The good thing is that he's a motivated guy who understands the direction he wants to go and is willing to listen. That's one of the first challenges. He was able to change the way he trains, change coaches, to develop better and improve. Right?”
“He's a great puncher,” Camponovo continued. “Davis is obviously one of the best fighters right now. Madueno is ready.”
Madueno is not known as a journeyman, but rather a power hitter who wears down opponents with his violence and aggression.
“It's interesting because Davis is a great boxer,” Camponovo said. “If he can figure out his guy early on, anything can happen, and I hope that's the case here. So if he can get a hold of you, it all falls apart.”
