If the Big 12 Conference preseason media poll is any indication, the Texas Tech football team won't have high outside expectations heading into the 2024 season.
The poll, released Tuesday, has the Red Raiders ranked ninth in the 16-team conference. Tech was ranked No. 4 in last year's preseason rankings but finished seventh in Big 12 play with a 5-4 record.
Newcomer Utah narrowly edged out Kansas State for the top spot, receiving 20 first-place votes to the Wildcats' 19. Oklahoma State, Kansas and Arizona took third, fourth and fifth places.
Iowa State University ranked sixth, West Virginia State University seventh and the University of California, San Francisco eighth, ahead of Texas Tech University.

TCU, Colorado, Baylor, BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and Arizona State remained on the ballot.
On Monday, the Big 12 officially welcomed four new members: Utah, Arizona, Colorado and Arizona State.
Texas Tech will go 7-6 in 2023 and enter year three of the Joey McGuire era. The Red Raiders open the season hosting Abilene Christian on Aug. 31 and begin Big 12 play on Sept. 21 when they host Arizona State.
Tech won't play Utah, Kansas State or Kansas this season, but will have to play Oklahoma State, Arizona and Iowa State on the road.
Big 12 Media Days will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The Red Raiders will be available to the media on Tuesday, while Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Utah and Arizona State will be available to the media on the first day of the event.
Arizona, Baylor, BYU, UCF, Colorado, Houston, Kansas and West Virginia are up for grabs Wednesday.
Maguire will be accompanied in Las Vegas by team captains Taj Brooks, Beren Morton, Bryce Ramirez, Jacob Rodriguez and Caleb Rogers. The event will air on ESPNU and ESPN+'s Big 12 Now. Maguire will appear on the ESPNU set at approximately 1:40 p.m. and hold a press conference immediately after.
