June 6 was a sad day for Peters Township field hockey as Grace Urban graduated. Since her sophomore season, she has dominated the game. In fact, this marks the third year the goalie has been named The Almanac & Observer-Reporter MVP.
Urban made 52 saves and allowed just nine runs to lead the Indians to the WPIAL finals, while also posting an 85 percent save percentage.
Urban, a three-year all-section and all-WPIAL player, captained the team to a 13-5 record and a district runner-up finish. Peters Township lost 1-0 in overtime to Pine-Richland in the Class 3A final on Nov. 4 at Cameron Stadium at Washington & Jefferson.
“Grace led her team with confidence and never shied away from a challenge, which inspired her teammates to do the same,” PT head coach Kelly Meenan said.
“Grace was an aggressive but smart player. She has worked hard over the last four years to do everything she can to keep the ball out of the back of the net.”
As a junior, she made 99 saves and allowed just 17 runs to lead the Indians to the playoffs, then in 2021 she recorded 84 total saves to help lead Peters Township to the final four of the WPIAL tournament.
Urban, an environmental activist, traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark to learn about climate change policy and advocacy.
Urban will be attending Duquesne University in the fall, where she will major in biochemistry and may play field hockey at the club level.
