Former featherweight champion Robbie Ramirez made headlines on Saturday night with a seventh-round knockout of Brandon Leon Benitez at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida.
Robeissi was fighting on the undercard of the ESPN-televised fight between WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez and Steve Clagett. For the talented Cuban Ramirez, it was his first return fight since losing the WBO 126-pound title to Rafael Espinoza in December and he showed a reinvention of his game, looking a totally different man than when he lost to the 6'1″ Mexican.
Robbie stayed on the inside throughout his bout against Brandon Benitez (21-3, 9 KOs), landing short shots and blocking punches from the higher-ranked fighter.
Benitez took a lot of damage in the fight, suffering from a bloody nose and swollen eyes by the fifth round, and had to withdraw from the bout by the sixth round as he was continuing to get beaten and was not competitive.
Robeisy reverted to his old amateur style in the sixth, standing at mid-range, leaning forward, smiling, firing pot shots and blocking punches returned by Benitez.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Robbie Cey (14-0, 9 KOs) landed an uppercut in the seventh round that caught Benitez under the chin and sent him to the canvas, forcing a stoppage of the bout at 2 minutes, 46 seconds.
Robbie could face Rafael Ramirez in a rematch to avenge the loss and regain the WBO title, which he must win because Naoya Inoue is expected to move up to 126 next year, giving him the perfect opportunity to land a big-money fight.
Judging by the way Robbie Sy fought Benitez, he plans to attack the taller Espinoza from the inside and take some of the power out of his punches. If Robbie Sy can take some of the power out of Espinoza's punches, he could knock him out. Robbie Sy hurt Espinoza in their bout last December, knocking him down in the fifth round, but Robbie Sy let him escape.
