MINNEAPOLIS — The U.S. men's Olympic gymnastics team is favored to win its first Olympic medal since 2008.
The men's team was announced at the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials in Minneapolis on Saturday, with Frederick Richard, Brody Malone, Paul Judah, Asher Hong and Steven Nedorosic heading to Paris.
The Olympic alternates are Shane Wiskas and Koi Young, who narrowly missed making the official team but are considered Olympians by the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Richard, the reigning world all-around bronze medalist, led the all-around standings after two nights of qualifying. The 20-year-old Massachusetts native is also popular on TikTok, where he documented his journey to the Paris Olympics. He placed first in the all-around and earned an automatic Olympic berth by finishing in the top three in three of his six events.
Brody Malone, the U.S. national all-around champion, led the first half of the competition, but 0.2 points behind Richard.
Malone struggled in her first rotation on the horizontal bar, her specialty event, but performed well in the all-around to earn a spot on her second Olympic team after missing last season with a serious knee injury that nearly ended her hopes of competing in Paris.
Nedorosic booked his ticket to Paris with just one performance on the pommel horse.
He is the world champion in the pommel horse and could be in contention for a medal in Paris — a notoriously volatile event, and Nedorosic's skill on the horse earned him an Olympic spot despite being a single-event specialist.
Hong, a Stanford University standout, will be making her Olympic debut with strong performances on the rings and vault. It will also be Judah's first Olympic Games.
Minnesota native Shane Wiskas wowed the home crowd and outperformed expectations by taking third place in the all-around and first place on floor exercise, but despite his success he will have to settle for another spot after representing the U.S. in Tokyo in 2021.
Starting with the Opening Ceremony on July 26 at 12pm ET, every moment and every medal from the Paris 2024 Olympics will be available to stream on Peacock.
