Black Belt Magazine proudly showcases the best martial arts training programs and events from around the world.
This week we're bringing you a double whammy, showcasing a featured school and event in one story.
Over the past 46 years, the West Coast World Martial Arts Association has produced 10,000 black belts under the guidance of Ernie Reyes Sr. On June 29th, the association will hold its master and black belt examinations.
Held every four years to test advanced master instructors from degree 5 to 10, the Master Test began in 1997 with the mission of developing black belts into exemplary individuals who excel physically, mentally and spiritually, and can contribute to making their communities and the world a more positive place. By 2024, there are expected to be approximately 500 black belts and master testers.
It was founded as West Coast Taekwondo under the guidance of Ernie Reyes and partner Tony Thompson in 1978. Based in Silicon Valley, the renowned studio was the home training ground for the West Coast Demonstration Team, who first revolutionized the martial arts world.
The West Coast Demo Team presented martial arts in a theatrical, stylized way, bringing something entirely new and exciting to audiences across the country. At the same time, Reyes was producing champions and future leaders in the martial arts world. Some of Reyes' early students included Scott Coker, George Chan, Cynthia Rothrock, Margie Reyes, and Ernie Reyes Jr.
Now the team has evolved and grown, with a new generation taking over and creating their own legacy under the brand name West Coast World Action Team.
Over the years, we have grown from one location to 32 affiliated schools in six states and expanded our curriculum to include boxing, kickboxing, MMA, FMA, as well as Japanese and Chinese weapons training. This approach has extended the longevity of our black belt students, some of whom are celebrating their 50th year of training on the West Coast.
After nearly 50 years of success, Ernie Reyes Sr. shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, but he has been preparing the next generation of the Reyes West Coast family to carry on the tradition, including his wife, Margie Reyes, and a powerhouse team that includes children Ernie Jr., Lee, Destiny, Esprit and Ki.
I am so proud of all of my children, their accomplishments, and their growth as unique individuals. My daughter, Destiny, has demonstrated incredible leadership in inspiring and guiding the next generation of students, so I know the next generation is in great hands.
This year, be sure to check out the Mastery Spectacular featuring World Action Demos, featuring Eskrima Master Long Lu, MMA World Champion Coach Professor Leandro Vieira, and San Francisco Taiko Sensei Tanaka. More information can be found on the school's social media and website.
“Martial arts is one of life's greatest gifts because it can bring together all different people, races, colors, beliefs and creeds in the peace and harmony that this world especially needs in life.” … Grandmaster Ernie Reyes.
