Bill Haney, father and trainer of WBC 140-pound “resting champion” Devin Haney, has refuted rumors that PPV sales for the April 20 fight between Devin and Ryan Garcia were not great.
In an interview this week, Bill claimed that the Haney vs. Garcia event brought in more PPV buys than any other event this year or in 2024. However, when asked for PPV figures, Bill confessed he doesn't have an official total.
There were hopes the Haney-Garcia fight would draw a PPV buy market of as much as one million due to Ryan's popularity on Instagram with 12 million followers and Devin's recent success, which included winning world titles in two weight classes.
“This fight sold more pay-per-views than any other fight this year and it didn't sell and it never will. What are you talking about?” Bill Haney told Thaboxingvoice on The X Show about the April 20 bout between his son Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia.
“After seven months and more success than any other fight, Devin is unsold?
When asked what the official PPV numbers for the Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia fight were, Bill Haney said, “I haven't been given an official number.”
Earlier this week, Ryan Garcia's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, called Haney a hard sell and scolded him for celebrating at a bowling alley that the New York State Athletic Commission had written off his losses as a result of Ryan's PED settlement.
De La Hoya considered it a “pathetic” way to get a win and had a sad look on his face while celebrating it. Though he didn't say it out loud, he thought it was weak to have a loss reversed.
Many fans on social media believe that the PPV numbers brought in by the April 20 event were due to Ryan's popularity, not Devin's.
Some believe that Haney's comments about Ryan's drinking and making him less likely to win the match may have hurt interest in the event, which is poisoning the well water. It would have been better if Haney had kept his thoughts about Ryan to himself and let Bill speak.
